June 9th, 2023:

THE EXPECTED AND THE UNEXPECTED

THE UNEXPECTED

Good News From The Supreme Court. In a 5-4 decision, Roberts and Kavanaugh sided with liberal justices to uphold Section 2 of the Voting Rights, which prohibits racially discriminatory voting practices, in this case Alabama’s gerrymander of black voters. A welcome moment where the most conservative voices didn’t get their way. This creates hope for more equity to come. You can read about it here.

And Because Of The Above:

MARK MEADOWS TESTIFIED TO THE GRAND JURY. Meadows, who was Trump’s loyal Chief of Staff, is considered a key witness in investigations into Trump’s role in January 6th as well as his mishandling of classified documents. You can read about this development here.
Meadows’ lawyer stated this week that his client maintains a commitment to tell the truth where he has a legal obligation to do so. Let us hope. More to come.

THE EXPECTED. Still

And finally. Trump was criminally charged by the Justice Department for retaining and mishandling classified documents. The 49-page indictment, which you can read here, states that material he lied about, kept illegally, and refused to return, included information about our nuclear programs, and our vulnerabilities—as well as those of our allies—to military attack. If you prefer, you can hear it read aloud here. With all we knew, it’s still jaw-dropping. There are apparently 34 boxes unaccounted for. Trump shared classified information with people lacking security clearance. None of this is good news for our country, but it is very good news for equal justice under the law. The only way out is through.

Jack Smith, the special counsel delivering the indictment, gave an historic three minute press conference. If you haven’t seen it yet, click here. More to come. Much more to come.
